Baltimore County police say that they are investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred in the Middle River area around 2 a.m. this morning.
Officials say that the incident started when an officer on patrol conducted a traffic stop on a vehicle that he suspected to be involved in narcotics activity at Old Eastern Avenue & Harrison Avenue. A male passenger exited the vehicle at the location and began to walk towards Eastern Blvd before stopping, The vehicle turned on Harrison Ave & pulled into a position parallel with the officer’s car.
Police say that at this point, while interacting with the officer, the man who was at one point the passenger of the vehicle suddenly placed his hand into his waistband area & turned towards the police officer. The officer, reportedly fearing that the suspect was armed with a weapon & his life was in imminent danger, fired his weapon striking the man at least one time.
The man was quickly transported by EMS to a local trauma center, details on his current condition were not released.
No police officers involved were reported to be injured, the single officer who fired his weapon will be placed on administrative leave while the incident is reviewed.
Officials confirm that the driver of the vehicle was taken into custody & the vehicle was towed from the scene after suspected narcotics were recovered. No weapon was recovered.
Once the Baltimore County Police Homicide Unit finishes with their investigation, the incident will be reviewed by the Baltimore County State’s Attorney’s Officer.
